A bag of Spinach!

Now I have seen Spinach, with beautiful green leaves full of vigour contrasting with the dark humus rich soil and looking pretty sexy… but there was one occasion where I truly did misinterpret the context of a bag of spinach!

Some years ago, a landscape architect I was working with had a site meeting with a client — a perfectly ordinary consultation, or so I thought.

When he returned to the office, he looked both a little excited and vaguely stunned and said, in a cheeky sort of raunchy way

“Orr, Orr yeah mate… She gave me a bag of spinach.”

I misinterpreted “a bag of spinach” to be some British slang for “arousal”.

I was nearly crying with laughter after about the sixth or seventh time I asked him to clarify exactly what it was that she gave him. He kept saying “A bag of spinach… mate!”

Simultaneously I am thinking I should try not to be too naive to this modern slang.

“How on earth did the client come on to him!” I thought as they did not appear like a match to me.

After a few more minutes of carry on and me explaining my perspective it turns out she didn’t come on to him at all.

It was literally a bag of spinach. Fresh-picked from her garden. He was chuffed. Super excited!
